Ecological monitoring

Ecological monitoring – finding out where species live, how many there are, and what they need – is vital to many conservation efforts.

Conservation search dogs can be up to 40 times more efficient than humans at collecting population and habitat data: they can cover large areas and rugged terrain, detect cryptic species and odors hidden in deep vegetation, and do so with enthusiasm and energy.

Searches conducted by humans are often oriented toward adult, territorial animals, but dogs find the droppings of all individuals, including juveniles and subordinates, providing better data and more accurate estimates of population and distribution.
